Starting fresh

My paltry earnings

April was not a good month for me earnings-wise.

One of my goals during my time off from school is to write more often. I’m thinking about “starting fresh,” coming up with different ideas to post about each day. So here I am, tapping away at the keyboard like a madwoman.

I’ve been thinking about relationships lately. How they form, how to maintain them, and how to end them.

It’s not easy to set boundaries in relationships sometimes, and it’s even more difficult to enforce them. But it is doable.

Relationships are the bedrock of general life satisfaction, according to many studies about happiness and what people value the most in life. Like on people’s tombstones, you often find “Loving father” or other relational terms rather than something like “hard worker.” Your career oftentimes doesn’t define your character. The relationships you build are more telling of what type of person you are, the values you have, and more.

I recently read a book all about human connection, called Together: The Healing Power of Human Connection in a Sometimes Lonely World, by Vivek Murthy, M.D. As it turns out, loneliness can have adverse health consequences.

Being connected with people around you is vital to your health, both physically and mentally.

All this reaffirms my understanding of what we often live for: the connections we have with loved ones (and sometimes even strangers). COVID made it difficult for people to meet in person, but I’ve found virtual hangouts to be enjoyable as well.

I hope I’ll be able to strengthen my connections as I enter this rest period before school starts once more.
