Many people in the Asian (and honestly, non-Asian, too) community have been horrified by the shootings in California.

The fact that the shootings happened during Lunar New Year, one of the most widely celebrated and loved holidays, only struck a deeper fear and sadness in our hearts.

Now is the time for us to join together and work towards preventing gun violence from happening.

How many shootings does it take for us to rally against the gun lobby?

How many children, elders, domestic violence victims, churchgoers, moviegoers, grocery shoppers need to die before the gun problem in the US is addressed?

I’ve been mulling over my thoughts for days, going through different stages of grief, appalled that these horrendous tragedies are still ongoing. Those are lives cut short — lives of people who can never be recovered. A partner that wakes up to an empty bed, a daughter unable to call her mother, a grandchild who may never know their grandparents.

It’s unbearably tragic. But I want to ask: at what cost is the second amendment being protected? Where are the good guys with guns? Why are there shooter drills at elementary schools?

I hope these events encourage people to seek resources to help them recover. Heaven knows we need more therapy and professional help to process these tragedies. And we need preventative, proactive measures to keep these news stories from recurring.
