Was I looking for love all this time?

I craved it. I didn’t know what it was, but I coveted it so much. I wanted so badly to find My Person and discover the “true love” behind photos of old couples who had been through so much of life together.

I gave up so much in search of love. From 2015 to 2020, I went on hundreds of dates. Not always with the same people, either. I had an on-off relationship with one boy, who I didn’t love more than platonically. And then disaster struck when he posted a group message about how dating an Asian girl was just upping his status symbol. Naturally, I found that highly offensive and humiliating, so I ended it then and there.

When my last relationship ghosted me after a question of whether he wanted to come meet my parents or not, I started becoming more cynical. It was clear that there was nothing beyond a physical connection between us, and I didn’t find our relationship satisfying or fulfilling in any way.

I spent the next few months single and navigating the complexities of life while in the midst of a pandemic. I’d almost given up hope when I installed OkCupid again in…
