3 Tips for Self-Care in a Customer Service Position
I’ve worked in customer service for years now. Here are the tips/perspectives that have helped me the most.
1. Someone else’s negativity might have nothing to do with you.
This helped me put things into perspective. People can have bad days and take it out on service workers, their friends/family, etc. It’s not always a reflection of your performance. When it is, though, treat it as feedback and try to see if there’s anything constructive to be found within it. If not, then try to let it go. Don’t dwell on the bad or you’ll have trouble finding the good. You’re not perfect & will make mistakes. What you do afterward to remedy those mistakes, though, speaks volumes about your personal character and work ethic.
2. Do your best given your resources, and take breaks when needed.
Sometimes, you might be stretched thin. Life happens, and you’re not always gonna be on top of your game. Give yourself some grace. We’re not always operating at 100% capacity for physical, mental, and emotional resources. If you’ve had a bad patron interaction and need to take a 2-minute (or more) breather, that’s okay, too!
